The International Association of Byron Societies (IABS) traces its roots to the founding of the Byron Society in London on January 20, 1971. Initially established to perpetuate Lord Byron's memory and promote research into his life and work, the society quickly expanded its vision internationally. By 1975, various Byron societies had formed worldwide, collectively referred to as the "International Byron Society." This global network evolved over the decades, transitioning through different organizational structures and names. In 2014, it was renamed the International Association of Byron Societies, reflecting its nature as a coalition of independent National Societies united in their dedication to Byron scholarship and appreciation.
Leslie A. Marchand, renowned biographer and editor of Lord Byron's works, played a pivotal role in the formation and growth of the International Byron Society. In his memoirs and other unpublished materials, Marchand expressed his firm belief that the Byron Society was crucial for maintaining and expanding interest in the poet's life and works. He saw the organisation as a vital force in promoting Byron's reputation worldwide, envisioning its influence extending well into the 21st century. Marchand's dedication to this cause helped the English Byron Society inspire the global network of Byron enthusiasts, scholars, and admirers. His efforts laid the groundwork for the ongoing study and appreciation of Byron's literary legacy across the "civilized world," as he put it, fostering a community that continues to thrive today.
